Our History
Horticulture Services, as its name implies, was founded to fulfill a crucial, but lacking need in Twin Cities commercial landscaping.
Earlier in his career, Owner Syd Stephan had been working as a foreman for a large commercial landscape construction firm. After installing a quality landscape, he would often see the health of the plantings quickly decline due to a lack of professional management. This was especially obvious with the trees, shrubs, and perennials on office campuses and townhome associations. As developers and property managers began to see the difference that professional, horticulturally based management could make on their properties, Syd’s fledgling company grew quickly.
Today, Horticulture Services LLC and its affiliates Irritech, Minnesota Snow and Ice Management LLC and Kage Innovation LLC have 50 employees during the peak season. Represented on our permanent staff are five Masters Degrees and six Bachelors degrees.
Annual sales approach three million dollars. The company is a full service, commercial landscape management company serving primarily home owner associations and medium sized retail and office customers in the east Twin Cities metropolitan area. Some of the services performed include mowing and turf management, tree and shrub maintenance, annual and perennial flowers, integrated pest management, fertilization, irrigation service, holiday lighting, and snow removal.
The company also has substantial sales in landscape and irrigation renovations for existing customers. The company also has a shade tree nursery on 40 acres in Scandia, MN.

Employing a company to perform a service on one’s own private property can be stressful for the resident. But the opposite of stress is peace of mind. This is what we want to give to our customers. A customer shouldn’t have to worry about his lawn or landscape, and he certainly shouldn’t have any cause to become embarrassed by the appearance or behavior of service personnel while on site. Horticulture Services employs only the most respectful and well groomed staff. They are uniformed and trained to display the utmost in courtesy and professionalism. "
